Note on Bound States and the Bekenstein Bound

In this brief note we draw attention to examples of quantum field theories which may hold interesting lessons for attempts to devise a precise formulation of the Bekenstein bound. Our comments mirror the recent results of Bousso (hep-th/03110223) indicating that the species problem remains an issue for precise formulations of this bound.

Nonlinear Bound States on Weakly Homogeneous Spaces

We prove the existence of ground state solutions for a class of nonlinear elliptic equations, arising in the production of standing wave solutions to an associated family of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We examine two constrained minimization problems, which give rise to such solutions. One yields what we call Fλ-minimizers, the other energy minimizers. We produce such ground state solution...

On the Bound States of Matrix Strings

We investigate excitations in Matrix Theory on T 2 corresponding to bound states of strings. We demonstrate the Dirichlet aspect of R-R charged vacua through a non-trivial connection between the U(1) and SU(n) sectors of the matrix SYM.

Bound states and the Bekenstein bound

We explore the validity of the generalized Bekenstein bound, S ≤ πMa. We define the entropy S as the logarithm of the number of states which have energy eigenvalue below M and are localized to a flat space region of width a. If boundary conditions that localize field modes are imposed by fiat, then the bound encounters wellknown difficulties with negative Casimir energy and large species number...

Relativistic Bound States

In this contribution, I will give a brief survey of present techniques to treat the bound state problem in relativistic quantum field theories. In particular, I will discuss the Bethe–Salpeter equation, various quasi–potential equations, the Feynman–Schwinger representation, and similarity transformation methods for Hamiltonian approaches in light–front quantization. Finally, I will comment on ...
